- An
Introduction
to
Noncommutative
Spaces and
Their
Geometries
(Lecture Notes
in Physics): These notes
arose from a
series of
introductory
seminars on
noncommutative
geometry the
author gave at
the University
of Trieste.
They are
mainly an
introduction
to Connes'
noncommutative
geometry and
could serve as
a "first aid
kit" before
one ventures
into the
beautiful but
bewildering
landscape of
Connes'
theory. The
main
difference
with other
available
introductions
to Connes'
work is the
emphasis on
noncommutative
spaces seen as
concrete
spaces.
Important
examples of
noncommutative
spaces are
provided by
noncommutative
lattices. The
latter the are
subject of
intensive work
the author is
doing in
collaboration
with others.
These notes
are also meant
to be an
introduction
to this
research.

space models,

of vector

from texts,
are used to
model semantic
relations
between words.
We argue that
the high
dimensionality
of typical
vector space
models lead to
unintuitive
effects on
modeling
likeness of
meaning and
that the local
structure of
word spaces is
where
interesting
semantic
relations
reside. We
show that the
local
structure of
word spaces
has
substantially
different
dimensionality
and character
than the
global space
and that this
structure
shows
potential to
be exploited
for further
semantic
analysis using
methods for
local analysis
of vector

rather than
globally

typically in

decomposition
or principal

analysis.

Detection of
Outliers in
Chemical Space: J. Chem. Inf.
Model. (25
July
2008)Abstract:
Detection of
outliers is a
complex and
challenging
area of
research in
chemical
theory. Among
current
notions, that
of outliers in
the chemical
spacedescripto
rsis
meaningful
with multiple
applications
in the field
of drug
discovery and
predictive
modeling.
Presented here
is a new
framework for
outlier
detection,
relying on a
discrete,
fragment-based
representation
of the
molecular
structures.
From this
starting
point, a
recursive
method is
developed that
quantifies the
contribution
of fragments
to compound
description
and identifies
outliers in
chemical
structure
databases
according to a
novel
definition. In
contrast to
existing
detection
routes, this
approach
avoids the use
of thresholds
usually
required to
quantify
outlying
behavior.
Three chemical
databases are
investigated
to demonstrate
its generality
and
flexibility.
The result
reveals a new
species of
outliers,
compounds with
no specific
structural
features,
rather than
unique ones.
